Northern Lights on May 2024

An aurora is a natural light display in Earth’s sky. It is predominantly seen in high-latitude regions around the Arctic and Antarctic. Commonly known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights — they appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky.

Auroras are the result of disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by the solar wind. Major disturbances result from enhancements in the speed of the solar wind from coronal holes and coronal mass ejections.

On the weekend of May 11, 2024, a historic geomagnetic storm blasted Earth and gave spectators as far south as Florida and Texas in the southern U.S a change to experience the norther lights. As a result, the sky around the world was filled with brilliant colors of green, pink, purple and red from the Northern Lights due to a geomagnetic storm causing G 5 “Extreme” conditions.
